Bitcoin risks drop to $71k as rounded-top pattern takes shape

Key takeaways

  • Bitcoin’s four-hour chart is displaying a potential rounded-top formation following its climb from the $63,000 mark.
  • The critical neckline and support zone for this pattern lies between $76,000 and $76,300.
  • A clean break below this support could trigger a technical decline toward the $70,900–$71,000 range.

Bitcoin is at risk of sliding toward $71,000 if a developing rounded-top pattern on its four-hour chart is validated by a clean break below the $76,000 support threshold.

The leading cryptocurrency surged from around $63,000 in mid-August to reach a peak between $80,000 and $81,500.

Since that peak, upward momentum has slowed, with the price action curving downward to form the classic dome shape of a rounded top.

This bearish outlook is further compounded by sluggish spot-market demand, even as perpetual futures demand remains in positive territory.

Rounded-Top Pattern Puts $71,000 Target in Play

This potential rounded-top structure has taken shape after Bitcoin’s solid rebound from its August lows.

On Monday, September 15, the digital asset was trading around $76,870, maintaining its position above the vital $76,000–$76,300 support corridor, which serves as the pattern’s neckline.

A decisive four-hour candle close under this support zone would confirm the bearish pattern, paving the way for a deeper retracement.

Measuring the height of the pattern from its peak to the neckline reveals a gap of roughly $5,000 to $5,300. Projecting this distance downward from a $76,000 breakdown point establishes a technical target of $70,900 to $71,000.

Technical Indicators Highlight Market Uncertainty

On the four-hour chart, Bitcoin’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovered near 54.5, pointing to neutral momentum rather than overbought or oversold conditions.

Additionally, Bitcoin is trading around its 20-period, 50-period, and 100-period exponential moving averages (EMAs). The convergence of these indicators underscores a tight tug-of-war between bulls and bears.

A sustained push back above the $79,500–$80,000 zone would weaken the bearish rounded-top thesis. Furthermore, a breakout past the recent highs near $81,500 would invalidate the pattern entirely and signal further upside. Until then, the $76,000 support level remains the critical pivot to watch.

On-chain demand metrics offer little support for a bullish continuation. According to CryptoQuant’s 30-day demand-growth metric, demand in the perpetual futures market stayed positive throughout September, but spot-market demand remained in negative territory.

As a result, overall demand for Bitcoin remained below zero, despite the ongoing activity in the derivatives market.

This divergence suggests that the recent upward price pressure is primarily being fueled by leveraged futures traders rather than investors buying and holding spot Bitcoin.

Reliance on Futures Demand Leaves Bitcoin Vulnerable

Rallies driven by derivatives are inherently more fragile than those built on robust spot market accumulation.

Perpetual futures demand can evaporate rapidly if traders unwind their leverage or face forced liquidations during a market downturn, which can intensify selling pressure and exacerbate volatility if key support levels fail.

A comparable divergence occurred in January and February 2026, when a temporary rebound in futures demand was followed by a drop in overall demand and a subsequent decline in Bitcoin’s price.

While this historical pattern does not guarantee a repeat performance, a confirmed breakdown below $76,000 without a corresponding recovery in spot demand would bring the $71,000 downside target into sharp focus.
